shelly moore band: hymns.

first off, i apologize that i have been MIA in the blog world.

secondly, i had the chance to take some pictures for shelly moore a few weeks ago of some people wearing shelly moore band t-shirts. the band just released a new CD called "a hymn project" and you can have it for only $5. you can't beat that.

go here and buy the CD. and buy a t-shirt if you're feeling cool.

ps: thanks to brentice and tyler for being shelly moore band t-shirt models.

lifetime baby enters the world...

Owen Speirs West entered the world at 11:40am on Friday, November 14th, 2008...also Brittany's birthday! :) He was 8 lbs. 3 ounces and 20.5 inches long. I went with Elizabeth, Jules, and Mikel to Greensboro on Saturday morning to see the new addition to the West family. He is precious. We had a little lifetime house reunion, but we sure did miss Megs! Here are some pictures of Speirs at the age of 1 day old.

studying memoirs

For the past couple of weeks at school, the 5th graders have been studying memoirs. We have read tons of memoirs and are currently finishing up the writing of our own memoirs. We will have a Writing Celebration on Friday where the parents can come and read the students' memoirs and enjoy seeing what their children are doing at Creech Road. Lots of my kids have written about embarrassing moments and they are hilarious. Wouldn't it be appropriate for me to have a truly embarrassing moment in front of my kids during our memoir study? Yes. And it happened yesterday.

Lunch room. 1:40pm. Picking my kids up from lunch. Standing next to the Assistant Principal just having a nice friendly conversation. I proceed to tell my kids that it's time to clean up their lunches and head to the door to get in line. Latonya is the first to come throw her trash into the empty trashcan right beside me. Apparently she barely drank any of her when it hit the bottom of the trashcan at about 7 mph, it immediately EXPLODED up into the air and all over me. There I was, standing in front of all of my kids, with Chocolate Milk not only all over my clothes, but seriously dripping off of my face. (If you know me, you know I hate milk. I know, it strengthens muscles, but I can't help it.) The next thing I knew, Latonya was sprinting to the bathroom to get paper towels and we were soon soaking up all the milk. It gave us a good laugh for the day.

I guess I'll be writing a memoir today...about my most embarrassing moment at school. :)

my life is busy busy.

sorry it's been so long since i've posted. it's 10:19 right now and my eyes are close to shutting. life is busy, but it is good. i had the opportunity to go on providence's fall retreat this past weekend and it was so great just to be able to get away from school for a weekend and not really think about it at all. i still love it so much, but it does consume my thoughts most of the time. it's crazy. our theme for the weekend was "restored" and how God had the end in mind from the very beginning and is bringing restoration for his people when he returns again. it was a refreshing time of being consumed with Christ. so anyway, i've also been taking pictures a lot recently which is exciting. i got to shoot daniel barker and catherine wilson's engagement pictures a few days ago which was a lot of fun! we went to the arboretum which gave us lots of options for fun pictures. :) here's one until i have more time to put some on the blog. for now i am heading to bed so that i will be rested for another day with my lovely 5th graders. goodnight!

writing journals

Growing up, I always loved Math and Science. I can take a formula and plug in some numbers, but I always struggled with the whole, "be creative and use your imagination," request from teachers. Reading and Writing were two things that I had to really focus on if I wanted to succeed in those areas at all. Yes, I eventually grew to love reading because I realized that I could learn so many new things from other people through books. But writing continues to be less than enjoyable for me.

Over the past weeks of learning about my students and who they are and what they enjoy, I have noticed that about 4 of them love Math/Science and the rest love Reading/Writing. Although I'm sad that most of them don't enjoy what I like doing so much, I have been able to learn so much from their love for writing just in this short time. I want to share with you 2 different writings from their writing journals that I collect and read almost everyday. I've found that their entries can make me smile and laugh uncontrollably, but some also bring tears to my eyes and sadden my heart.

This was written after being told to do a free choice writing, meaning that they could choose the topic and style of writing. This entry is called: "Miss Fallis"

"Miss Fallis is my teacher for 5th grade. She is always cheerful and wears silver jewlry. She is skinny and has light colored skin. She has short, dark hair and bright colored eyes. When she rings the wand she always expects us to listen to the speaker. When we follow the rules she gives our team a stick. I love Miss Fallis!"

This entry was the result of the prompt, "Tell me about something that happened yesterday."

"I found out that my brother had a kidney tumor. When my mom got home, the first thing they did was cry in my dad's arms. Then, she came in my room and said, "Roman and I went to the hospital and they said that ROman has a kidney tumor." When she said that, my heart sank on top of my stomach and tears ran down my face like waterfalls. At that moment my dad came in and hugged me and said, 'We'll get through this.' I believed him."

Life is sweet.

this is my life...

...and i LOVE it.

of course i wanted to put a picture of every single one of my kids, but i decided that i would just pick one that depicted what i get to enjoy every weekday. meet johnny (code name). he loves to play sports, talk about sports, and only sports. but i finally figured out today that he enjoys math and is really good at it. i'm excited to see him excel in this area, and be pushed in other subjects. and i hope that whatever he's doing with his hands is not a gang sign of any sort.

i don't think that my first week and a half of teaching could have been any better. i absolutely love every minute that i'm with my kids. whether i'm ringing my wand (yes, i have a wand and it is amazing) or repeating the same instructions for the eleventh time or shooting half court shots during recess or teaching fractions or reading frindle aloud or making copies or eating lunch in 10 minutes or reading their writing journals late at night...i love it. i guess i thought that after a week or so i would maybe get tired of being there, but honestly, the kids make me want to be there. it's wonderful.

so here are the top 5 reasons i love 5th graders:

5. they don't take your word for it. you have to prove everything to them. including that their teacher played basketball in high school. or that i sometimes wear glasses.
4. they think it's the funniest thing EVER to call me katherine instead of miss fallis. (took care of that one REAL fast)
3. they taught me that 3 pillows, a bean bag, and a rocking chair are the greatest items ever invented.
2. they love to talk. and i love to listen.
1. they aren't scared to be themselves. (wait til they get to middle school...scary)

i'll try to keep you updated with some funny stories that come from my classroom. here's one for now: person # 1 sent a note to person #2 that said, "you're hot." person #2 wrote back and said, "me?" person #1 replied by saying, "yes. who do you like in class?" then i caught them and collected the note. the next day: person #1 wrote a note to person #2 with their phone number written on it. person #2 replied with their number. then i caught them again and had a little chat with both of them. :)

thanks for reading! happy wednesday!

back to school!

In approximately 40 hours, I'll welcome 22 fifth graders into my classroom at Creech Road Elementary. Although I can't believe it's already here, I am very anxious to meet them all and see what it is really like to spend a whole day with them! I'll keep you updated on how things go, but for now, here are some pics of my classroom. If you want to, comment on this post with an idea for something I can do with the kids on the first day! :)

commercial photos

as some of you know, i took a job with a company out of cary, nc a couple of months ago to do some commercial photography for them. it has been quite an adventure since i had never done commercial shots before. after seeking out some advice and researching, researching, researching some of the best things to apply to such jobs, i went out to shoot some buildings!

i should finish up within the next week or so with this project, which is good since i start a real job on friday! (ahhhhhhhhhhhhh) i'll be teaching 5th graders at creech road elementary in garner, nc and am SO SO SO excited about it. can't wait to post some pics of my precious kids.

the wachtels.

For each of us that were able to be a part of this weekend, I know that we have truly been blessed by the time we spent together celebrating the marriage of Seth and Jill and the goodness found in Christ alone. On Friday night at the rehearsal dinner, Seth shared a verse from Psalm 103 that said, "For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His love for those who fear Him." Thank you to the two of y'all for presenting to us a pure picture of Christ and His love for His bride, the Church. Praise the Lord! (and enjoy the pictures!)

Mr. and (soon to be) Mrs. Seth Wachtel

We finally found a time when I could take some shots of Jill and Seth before they got married. 6 days left until the big day...I can't believe it's so close. These are all taken in the downtown Raleigh area. Here is one of my favorites from the day:

And a slideshow of some of the others. Can't wait until this weekend! :)

does anyone have a lightbulb?

When we got to Elizabeth's apartment, we noticed that her room was SO dark with no natural light, and only one little lamp in the corner. So we went on an adventure to find her a lightbulb for her 2nd lamp...not knowing how to say it in Spanish or anything. We were successful. :) I finally put together a slideshow of pictures from our time there. Jules and I had so much fun getting to see her and can't wait until she comes home in November!

2 1/2 weeks and counting...

Jill and Seth are getting married in less than three weeks! I met Seth in Wilmington when he moved there in the 2nd grade and then met Jill in college at NC State and it has been a blessing to watch them together! After their engagement in September, I took some pictures of them at Lake Johnson in Raleigh. Here is a little tribute to them as they prepare to commit their lives to each other. :) Oh, and they want to take more pics before they get married because they both have about 4 more inches of hair now, so we'll see if we can fit that in sometime soon!

smokin' hot argentina!

Jules and I ventured to Argentina for 10 days this month to visit Elizabeth and gain a glimpse of what life is like for her there. We had a great time! Summer Project was there at the same time and Daniel and Mikel Bass were a part of that team. Little Madi learned how to dance with her arms up while we were there and decided to take a moment to impress the people on the streets with her moves. It was precious! Hopefully more pics to come if I get a chance to load them. Oh, and the title to this post goes along with the moment when Jules tried to tell an Argentine what "smokin' hot" means in English. Hilarious. Chao for now!
